The Beginning…

Written by VitViper. No comments Posted in: Work Log

To summarize a generally bad week, my 08 Si engine decided to let cylinder #4 go to a better place literally right after dyno pull #32 as I was tuning my new cam setup. It happened when we were completely off the throttle, so it was not a tuning issue/detonation. We had no idea what happened at the time, but we could see through the plug hole that something was in cylinder #4 and something had tapped the spark plug in that cylinder since the electrode was now touching the tip.

Well I had the shop order an engine I found locally ASAP, and the cam tuning session turned into an engine swap session. I now have a K20 out of an ’06 Si with the same miles as my 08 engine (just shy of 38k miles) in my car, and it runs great. I picked up my car today and the busted engine that was pulled out of it. I got a chance to just quickly inspect the damage after we got it to my buddy’s house. Here’s some shots with my Pre camera (sorry, forgot my good digi cam, heh). The quality is good enough to get an idea of what happened. Mind you this engine did not see past 8800 rpm on the dyno, and never once bounced my 8900 rpm limiter for tuning. It had a full aftermarket valvetrain that is capable of sustaining 11k revs (valvetrain, not the stock rods/pistons).

Poor K20.

Now on to the photos.

Yup… a single bent/broken valve ended this K20′s life early (38k miles). I now have a spare k20…. Someone say big HP turbo rebuild?

I’m going to tear this engine apart and look at the complete damage.
